Keep your staff and save your money

Volume:1 Issue:1 - March 2006

"Do you know a reliable receptionist, aesthetician, or nurse that I can hire?"
This is the most common question that I get asked by my clients. At any given point in time nine out of ten clinics are seeking new staff. Indeed, finding reliable and qualified staff is a daunting task. What's alarming is how many qualified and motivated employees eventually get fed up with disorganization and lack of appropriate direction and feedback and leave in search of better work environments. I see my fair share of inter-practice movement of staff. But make no mistake, there is proof that high staff turnover rates drive away your clients and create an unproductive work atmosphere. If you are having a high staff turn over rate, you are losing money. Consider the following: >
  • Do you have a formal recruitment and hiring practice or do you hire only based on who is available?
  • Do your employees get appropriate direction from the top or are they expected to "just know what you expect of them".
  • Are your employees expected to act as your personal assistants as well as focus on your core business?
  • Do you have a unique value proposition that is built on sound strategies that separate your practice from the clinic down the road? And does your staff know how to communicate this to your clients?
  • Are your employees instructed on your priorities or must act as if "everything is a priority"?
  • Are your employees genuinely appreciated when they over-perform and do you provide clear feedback when they under-perform?
  • Do you personally enact your vision of how you want your staff to be?
These are some of the most common reasons why the talent that you have developed with your money and resources leave to join your competition.
